Johnson City Commission Approves Budget With Property Tax Increase

The Johnson City Commission approved its budget on the third and final reading Thursday night with no changes since previous meetings. The budget includes a 28-cent property tax increase, with some of that money going toward a new aquatic center. Commissioner Whitney Goetz was the lone “no” vote, saying now isn’t the right time for the center. The property tax rate will move to $1.66 per $100 of assessed value. The budget will go into effect on July 1.

Johnson City Native Signs Contract With the Sacramento Kings

Johnson City native B.J. Edwards signed a one-year deal with the Sacramento Kings, and depending on how he performs in the NBA’s summer league, the Kings could give Edwards a two-way contract. The guard finished his collegiate career at SMU after starting in Knoxville at the University of Tennessee, where he averaged 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists a game with the Mustangs. It’s a proud moment for Johnson City as one of its own earns a shot at the highest level of professional basketball.
