📜 Today in Johnson City History

One hundred and twenty-five years ago today in 1901, newspapers across the country carried the obituary of Martha Patterson of Greeneville — daughter of President Andrew Johnson — who had presided over the White House during her father’s term while her mother was ill. She was known for personally managing every room of the White House and making the butter from the White House dairy herself, while hosting state dinners and receiving guests. Her opening words upon arriving in Washington: “We are but plain people from East Tennessee.”
