Fatal Gray Shooting Ruled a Dispute Over Handicap Parking Spot

A deadly shooting in the Gray community left one man dead after what police say began as a dispute over a handicap parking spot. Johnson City Police Department Lt. Gary Wills told News 5 the shooting, which took place near a smoke shop, occurred around 9:30 a.m. Friday morning. A person of interest was detained and questioned by officers; charges were still pending and names had not been released for either the victim or suspect. Gray Elementary School was placed on lockdown for approximately 20 minutes due to the shooting, though the lockdown was subsequently lifted.

Trooper Uses Patrol Car to Stop Recklessly Driving Suspect in School Zone

A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper used their own patrol car to intercept a suspect driving recklessly through a Johnson City school zone. A trooper positioned their cruiser to absorb the impact and stop the suspect; preliminary reports indicated officers were already pursuing a stolen SUV out of Jonesborough, reportedly driven by Nicholas Dorscher, 35, when the suspect continued erratic driving down North Roan Street. The incident drew attention as school zones have seen heightened enforcement as the new school year gets underway.

📜 Today in Johnson City History

Ninety-five years ago today in 1931, a violent confrontation at a home near Hampton in Carter County left farmer Nat Hyder gravely wounded and his stepson facing charges, after a family dispute turned into a struggle involving a knife and firearms. Hyder was rushed to a hospital in nearby Elizabethton in critical condition.
