Washington County School Board Unanimously Censures Member Keith Ervin Over Student Comment
The Washington County Board of Education voted unanimously to censure board member Keith Ervin in an April 8 emergency meeting, after he came under fire for saying “God, you’re hot” to a female student during a board meeting six days prior. The girl, who is a student member of the board, had just wrapped up asking questions about career and technical education when Ervin put his arm around her and hugged her from the side and made the comment.
At the end of the meeting, the board voted unanimously to censure Ervin — a censure being a formal statement of disapproval, and the only disciplinary action available since a board member cannot be terminated unless they do something illegal. According to records, Ervin had been censured before in 2009 for making a “lewd, juvenile gesture of a sexual nature” in a classroom at David Crockett High School. Despite growing calls for his resignation, Ervin has not stepped down and is up for reelection this year, expected to advance in the May 5 primary.

Planning Commission Chairman Benjamin Dutton noted that the commission’s role is to act in the best interest of the city as a whole.
Johnson City commissioners moved forward with the rezoning request at their April 10 meeting but indicated they are awaiting additional information before a final decision. Residents near the proposed development have raised concerns about increased traffic on neighborhood streets.
