Johnson City Asks Residents to Weigh In on Data Centers

The City of Johnson City is asking people to share their thoughts on data centers through a new survey. The city says it is “currently evaluating data center operations & potential impacts such as noise, location, & compatibility with surrounding uses,” and the survey asks residents which issues concern them most and what level of concern they have about data center development in Johnson City. Those who fill out the survey can also select what kind of approach they would like to see the city take on data centers and how they would prefer to find updates on the matter.

Memorial Day Honored at Johnson City’s Veterans Memorial Park

Johnson City marked Memorial Day with a solemn ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park, honoring those who gave their lives in service to the country. Two Memorial Day ceremonies were held in Johnson City — first, a ceremony at Memorial Park held by the American Legion near the doughboy statue across the street from city hall, and then at Mountain Home National Cemetery, which hosted a wreath-laying ceremony accompanied by a moment of silence and the playing of Taps.

Hundreds Gather at Mountain Home National Cemetery for Flag Ceremony

Hundreds of volunteers gathered at Mountain Home National Cemetery in Johnson City to honor fallen service members by placing flags at gravesites ahead of Memorial Day, with more than 18,000 gravesites receiving flags during the annual ceremony. Among the volunteers were members of the Sequoyah Council, Scouting America, and Girl Scouts of the USA, and the cemetery is the final resting place for veterans who served in conflicts ranging from the American Revolutionary War up to Operation Iraqi Freedom. This year marked the 75th annual flag placement ceremony, a tradition held every Saturday morning of Memorial Day weekend.

Emergency Response Trailers Distributed Across Northeast Tennessee

Eight Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) trailers have been bought and distributed to each county in Northeast Tennessee, according to the Washington County/Johnson City Emergency Management Agency. Each trailer is outfitted with equipment such as chainsaws and personal protective equipment, as well as other tools to assist people during disasters, and the equipment can be used to remove debris, help communities during severe weather, and provide aid during emergencies. The agency announced that it and its partners helped purchase and equip the trailers, which were then distributed to all of the counties in Tennessee Emergency Management District 1.

A local veteran and business owner recently made headlines for a meaningful Memorial Day gesture — honoring Gold Star families with custom-made fishing rods. Matt Moore, a veteran and owner of Hellbender Outfitters in Elizabethton, is giving back to families who have lost U.S. service members. The effort highlights the region’s strong tradition of supporting those who have sacrificed in service to the nation.
